Fiscal Year Ends with an Increase in Seizures at International Bridges

During these last 12 months CBP officials seized 4.4 millions of pounds of different kinds of drugs, mostly marijuana. They also confiscated a total of 57.9 million dollars in cash that had not been declared.

LAREDO, Tx.- Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confiscated more drugs, arrested more people and intercepted more Money at the international Bridges this fiscal year than what they did in the previous 12 months.

The statistics report revealed that the work done by Customs Officials at the land port has been intensified against drug trafficking.

During these last 12 months CBP officials seized 4.4 millions of pounds of different kinds of drugs, mostly marijuana. They also confiscated a total of 57.9 million dollars in cash that had not been declared to the authorities; this amount represents a 74 percent increase compared to what was confiscated the previous year.

They also detained 224 thousand persons, that were inadmissible to the country, at the international bridges, and they were able to arrest 556 thousand subjects that tried to violate the law when entering the U.S.

Jayson Ahern, Acting Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection pointed out that these accomplishments were the result of having more personnel working in the locality and the high technology and resources that were being applied at this port of entry.

In regards to the amount of cocaine seized, the amount went up to 53%, and for marijuana a 19% increase was revealed and up to 11% in the confiscation of pills and ephedrine.

During this past fiscal year the CBP agents assigned to the international bridges inspected a total of 361.2 million travelers, they processed 108.5 million vehicles, arrested 38 thousand 964 criminals and 9 thousand 500 with a criminal record.

One of the greatest challenges was for international trade to grow and improve and during the previous fiscal year it was possible to surpass the two trillions in lawful trade with Mexico.

Moreover, the Border Patrol officials also increased their numbers in regards to seizures; the confiscation of heroine went up by 316 percent and 58 percent of marijuana and 18% of cocaine.

The federal agency added a total of 2 thousand 600 new agents for the Border Patrol in this previous fiscal year, to reach a total of 20 thousand agents that will oversee the nation's security.
