EAGLE PASS, TEXAS - U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry this weekend seized a cache of 10,000 rounds of ammunition during an outbound examination.

The seizure occurred on Sept. 18, 2011 during an outbound (southbound) examination at the Eagle Pass International Bridge. A CBP officer referred a 1995 Ford Windstar driven by a 26-year-old male U.S. citizen from Eagle Pass for a secondary examination. During an intensive examination of the vehicle, CBP officers discovered boxes of ammunition hidden within the vehicle. CBP officers seized 500 boxes containing a total of 10,000 rounds of 7.62x 39mm caliber ammunition and the vehicle.

CBP officers turned the driver over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents for further investigation.

“This is the largest single seizure of ammunition by CBP officers at Eagle Pass Port of Entry thus far in Fiscal Year 2011,” said Cynthia O. Rodriguez, CBP Port Director, Eagle Pass. “This follows a seizure of 3,020 rounds of ammunition at the Del Rio Port of Entry last week and illustrates the resolve of our officers to keep our borders safe through continued outbound enforcement efforts.”
