Robert Cuellar, director of nutrition services for LISD said all children and young people under 18 should take advantage of the free food which is sponsored by the office of the Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples.
The program offers breakfast from 8:45 am to 9:45 am and lunch from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, with the sole purpose of helping low-income families . "Many depend only on the meals they receive at school so it is very important to take advantage of this special program during the summer," he said.
To benefit, simply go to any of the sites where they offer breakfast and lunch, no registration is required, nor proof of income or residence. He stressed that LISD schools have a special emphasis with the three E's, which means "Education, Eating Right and Exercise".
"We have an overweight and poor nutrition problem within the community and through this plan we want to fight it," he said.
LISD has 62 sites and will be open 49 days while UISD will have 25 places open.
Food is prepared by staff of the school kitchen in order to prepare well-balanced, nutritious meals. For more information call 211 or (956) 473-6556.
