LAREDO, TX. - The chancellor of the university system, John Sharp, came to Laredo accompanied by Jim Schwertner and Elaine Mendoza, members of the Regents system, to head the special ceremony.
President of TAMIU, Dr. Ray Keck, was on hand to greet the special guests and to honor Senator Zaffirini as a prominent leader of higher education in Texas.
It was last week when the system of regents of Texas A & M decided to name the building in honor of Zaffirini, taking into account her hard work and support given to the university.
"She is simply tireless when it comes to getting resources for college and has more than deserved this center bearing her name," said Sharp.
Keck said the support from Zaffirini has been critical in Texas especially for TAMIU.
"She knows very well the importance of education. She has maintained a deep focus on ensuring our university the resources we need to continue offering quality education," he said.
The Student Success Center was made possible by state funding made by Zaffirini in 2006 with the backing of Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, under the goal of having all services required by students under one roof.
Currently students who wish to attend TAMIU enter this place to make the admission process, perform the necessary examinations, register for classes, apply for financial aid, make payments, buy books and even get some counseling services.
Senator Zaffirini said she was very proud and said she will continue working to secure the resources required for successful students.
