Stories like this are becoming more important to celebrate World Blood Donor Day, a celebration that took place last week on June 14.
Aleida Nichols, who works for the organization, said that donating is easy and fast. The donator has to be 17 or older, weigh more than 110 pounds, be in good health and provide identification.
She said that nationally 39,000 units of blood are required each day to meet the need in cancer treatments, elective surgeries, organ transplants, heart surgeries and accidents.
In fact, while someone is reading this, there is a person who needs blood every two seconds because someone has an emergency, going through treatment or needs a transfusion.
Statistics indicate that one in seven people entering a hospital will need blood. Studies show that 37% of the population is able to donate, but only 10% do so. The blood is so valuable that a pint, equivalent to 473 milliliters, can save up to three lives.
Those interested in knowing when blood drives will be held in Laredo can call (800) 292-5534 extension 2243.
