(June 27, 2012) LAREDO, Texas – International Bank of Commerce (IBC)–Laredo and Commerce Bank applauded student excellence in the Laredo community through the bank’s annual scholarships, the Antonio R. Sanchez Sr. Memorial Scholarship and the Dennis E. Nixon Scholarship.

A total of $31,000 in scholarship money was awarded to area students this year.

The A.R. Sanchez scholarship program, which was created to honor the late Mr. Sanchez, founder of IBC, has helped Laredo area students continue their pursuit of advanced education for more than a decade.

The Dennis E. Nixon scholarship was created in 1995 by the IBC Employee Advisory Board (EAB), a group of employees who volunteer to coordinate community outreach and service projects in the spirit of IBC’s “We Do More” philosophy.

Instead of collecting money for a birthday gift to give the bank president, the employees dedicate those funds, on Mr. Nixon’s behalf, to help students with their future endeavors.

“Because of Mr. Nixon’s support of education, the EAB saw this as an excellent way to honor Mr. Nixon and also further his work of improving our community,” said Kristina Valenciano, president of the EAB.

“These scholarships are part of our commitment to ‘do more’ for our communities and our youth,” said IBC Chairman and CEO Dennis Nixon.

“IBC is proud to recognize these exceptional students and to assist them in their pursuit of a higher education. I am additionally honored by the generous donations from the IBC team on my behalf.”

Recipients of the A.R. Sanchez scholarships were selected from each of the 11 area high schools. Students were selected to receive the scholarship by school counselors based on demonstration of financial need, a ‘Do More’ attitude, leadership in student and community affairs, and academic promise.

Additionally, four students received the Dennis E. Nixon Scholarship, which recognizes students who go above and beyond by ‘doing more’ in their communities and schools.

Each of the A.R. Sanchez scholarship recipients will receive a $1,000 scholarship and each of the Dennis E. Nixon scholarship recipients will receive a $500 scholarship to assist with the costs of continuing education.

Award presentations were made at each of the students’ schools to honor their accomplishments.
