Unconfirmed cases of West Nile virus

LAREDO, TX. - Dr. Hector F. Gonzalez, director of the City of Laredo Health Department explained that this city has been free of the West Nile virsus for five years free and three years of dengue.

He said many people with strong immune defenses, probably suffered an insect bite but at a lower level.

"There are 25 counties affected with West Nile virus, which include large cities like Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio, but not here nor in Nuevo Laredo.Within our community we have s very effective prevention program," said Gonzalez.

Every day, Laredo is fumigated especially in areas such as abandoned houses where there is uncut grass, lakes, canals, streams, the area of ​​the Rio Grande, Lake Casa Blanca and other ponds.

"And we ask people to take appropriate action on their property. The city holds brigades to remove old tires and junk," he said.

The various divisions of the health department especially assists vulnerable patients with diabetes, hypertension, HIV-AIDS, cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases that cause low defenses in people.

"People need to start using repellent sprays, especially older adults," advised the doctor. Dr. Gonzalez advises people not to exercise at sunrise or sunset without the use of clothes that cover arms and legs, plus bug spray repellent.
