LAREDO, TEXAS - The economic situation and family breakdown are the factors that have forced many women to leave their role as housewives, and commit crime as a way to bring money home.

Theft of goods like home appliances, scams or theft of credit cards are among the most common crimes that are sending many women to the Webb County Jail.

"It is sad to see how these women choose to commit a crime because they are in a desperate economic situation. The lack of money forces them to look for any way to bring money home," said the Honorable Hector Liendo.

During the month of August, 10 people were arrested at least eight were women, which caught the attention of the judge.

"When talking to them all you hear are their sad stories. Some were abandoned by their partners, others are single mothers and they are addicts and alcoholics," he said.

Another crime that has become common in Laredo is the abandonment or neglect of infants by women who go out to work or who are simply tired of the life.

They neglect their children by leaving them out on the street or locking them in the house to go have fun.

"This is unfortunate because it is a felony offense level that can keep them in jail for a long time," said Liendo. He noted that in many cases, after the arrest of a woman, the mother goes, a family member or spouse to ask to be let out because their children miss her.

"In these cases we must act with discretion and if their crimes are minor, we look for ways to help them so they can return to their families as soon as possible," the official said.

Liendo said just a few weeks ago he put a bail on a woman who stole two fans from a house she lived in.

"The poor weeping woman told me she could not pay the rent and had to go to a relative's home but did not want her children to suffer from the heat and decided to take some fans.

She is not a criminal but a desperate mother," he said.

Although not always possible, when people are truly repentant and want to change their lifestyle seek help in social programs.
