LAREDO, TEXAS – The seizure occurred on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2012 when CBP officers processing commercial buses at the Lincoln-Juarez Bridge (Bridge Two), encountered two male passengers carrying some equestrian implements.

One of the men, a 27-year-old Mexican citizen from Chicago, Illinois and the other man, a 52-year-old Mexican citizen from Melrose, Illinois were referred for secondary inspection.

CBP officers conducted an intensive inspection of the baggage and the equestrian equipment that the men had. The secondary examination resulted in CBP officers finding two packages of alleged heroin within the implement.

The two packages of alleged heroin weighed a total of 2.10 kilograms (five pounds). The alleged heroin has an estimated street value of $500,000.

CBP officers seized the alleged heroin and arrested the two male bus passengers. The men were then turned over to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents for further investigation.

“CBP agriculture specialists are instrumental in conducting baggage inspections within the bus processing area. Together with the non-intrusive imaging systems that they utilize in checking people’s personal belongings and their dedication to carrying out CBP’s agriculture mission, CBP agriculture specialists were successful in the interception of this load of illegal narcotics,” said Sidney K. Aki, CBP Port Director, Laredo.
