Mayor Salinas Requests More Funds for the Border

LAREDO, TX.- Mayor Raul Salinas took advantage of his trip to Washington D.C. to request more funds for the border region, especially for security purposes.

Salinas met with Attorney General Eric Holder to request more funding to buy equipment and hire more personnel to patrol the streets of Laredo and thus offer the community more security.

"I explained to him that we need more than the verbal commitment, that we need the funds to make these promises and projects a reality," Salinas mentioned.

He also asked Attorney General Holder to always have Laredo in mind when the time comes to distribute the resources for the COPS program, through which they can obtain more funds to higher new police officers.

This program pays the salary to the police officers for a period of time and then the local government absorbs the costs.

Salinas also asked for Laredo to be considered when a federal initiative to spend 11 million dollars in bulletproof vests for police officers in different cities.

Moreover, Mayor Salinas also met with Thomas Vilsack, Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, who proponed a plan to start carrying out health exams for a nutrition pilot program for children and women.

"We hope that our local Health Department can be part of this special proposal, which will create more jobs in the health sector," the Laredo Mayor said.

Mayor Salinas also met with Robert Kennedy Jr., a nation wide renowned environmental activist, who he invited to visit Laredo to share his knowledge and ideas with the community.
