San Carlos Colonia is Visited by Director of Census

LAREDO, Tx.- National director of the 2010 census made a visit to the San Carlos colonia, to invite residents to be counted in order to avoid any fund reduction from the federal government.

Dr. Robert Groves toured many of the houses of the colonias and spoke personally with them to make the call to respond to the census questionnaires.

"It is very important that they be counted because the federal government issues funds according to the response from the population, if there is less people in the census then there will be less money for the county," Groves mentioned.

He was accompanied by Gabriel Sanchez, regional director of the 2010 Census and by Federal Congressman Henry Cuellar, who invited Groves two weeks ago.

"Dr. Groves visit is very important because I wanted him to personally visit a colonia and invite the community to be counted in the census of 2010 which begins in March," Cuellar stated.

Groves said he decided to travel around areas of the coutry that he considered as "hard to count" and Webb County is included in this special list.

Cuellar welcomed the interest of Dr. Groves to personally visit the colonies and talk to people. He asked the community to respond to the questionnaires regardless of their migratory status.

"The only way to get more than $400 billion that are distributed by the federal government each year is to have an accurate count of the population in our county," Cuellar affirmed.

These funds are used for health programs, education, infrastructures and to improve the living conditions of residents at the colonias.
