SNAP Wants to Help Laredoans

LAREDO, Tx. - Do know what SNAP is and the benefits it can bring to your family? If the answer is no, the Food Bank of South Texas can help those interested in obtaining a card for that will enable them to get free food.

Alfredo Castillo, executive director of Food Bank of South Texas, stated that since October 1st 2008, the federal Food Stamp Program was renamed to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program(SNAP).

"This program helps low-income people or those with no income to buy healthy food, it does not give cash but a plastic card that can be used to purchase food in stores," he mentioned.

He said that although 32.6 percent of the population lives on poverty level in Laredo, only 57 percent of those who are eligible for SNAP, take advantage of the benefits.

"There are millions of dollars being returned to the government for not being used in Laredo," he shared. He said that the Food Bank of South Texas has staff solely dedicated to provide assistance to people who want to reap the benefits of SNAP.

The main requirements for applicants are, must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident for at least 5 years, if people are undocumented but his children are residents or citizens, they may be eligible for SNAP.

"There is also a chart of income that must be followed by the number of members in a family," he assured. The income is from $1,174 per month for one person and up to 3,200 if there are six people.
