Laredo Helps Sick Child

LAREDO, Tx.- Most people have basic blood types such as A, B and O, however, the human body can build hundreds of antigens that result in very rare blood types.

Such is the case of Dominic Mazziotta, a 10-year resident of San Antonio, who suffers from a rare condition known as blood cancer, a rare condition that causes his red blood cells to attack and destroy its platelets.

The child has become a beneficiary of the Community Blood Center of South Texas because he needs transfusions continuously. There will be a campaign in Laredo to collect blood.

Since last year, when Dominic was diagnosed with the rare disease, he has received 40 units of blood, each one of 16 ounces, and because of the severity of the illess, each time he needs a greater dosage.

Only 40 people worldwide have this disease and Dominic is the only pediatric case. This child's struggle against death has led campaigns for blood donors not only in San Antonio, but throughout South Texas.

"When a patient requires a transfusion of foreign blood, it is necessary to work with Tex Qual in order to find the antigens required, first looking for blood, then looking for donors and finally if no blood is found, the searches extends to the national database," Director of the laboratory, Gary Griffin stated.
