The officers started a special program in coordination with the directors of the Laredo Independent School District (LISD), to encourage kids to read and how they may succed through reading.

STAR (Success Trough Accelerated Reading), started yesterday at Farías Elementary, with the participation of school personnel and migration agents.

LISD spokeswoman, Verónica Castillón, mentioned that the federal officials' mission is to express the importance of reading so that students may have a greater academic development.

"This program is designed to help students in each one of their subjects through reading, they are going to have alot of interaction with law enforcement officials," she indicated.

Assistant Chief of the Laredo Border Patrol, Rosendo Hinojosa, stated that 300 children from different LISD schools will participate, who will be visited by five agents each week.

With this activity, the federal agency is demonstrating the desire they have of becoming more involved in the community and help build better citizens and a better environment for all residents of Laredo.
