LAREDO, Tx.- A suspected cockfighter was arrested by police officers on animal cruelty charges. He carried 49 cocks in a van, 19 of them already dead.

Elías Solorio Alvarado, 39, was sent to the county jail on 19 charges of animal cruelty, classified as a fourth degree felony and penalized with up to two years in prison.

Police Department spokesman, Joe Baeza, informed that someone called the station to report that some one was throwing strange objects in a trash can on the 1400 block of Sánchez.

Patrolmen arrived to a business and found Solorio Alvarado unloading several bundles from a Nissan Frontier.

When officers inspected the bundles, they then found the 49 roosters in the truck, only 30 were alive. Alvarado was throwing the dead roosters away.

Baeza also mentioned that many of the cocks were nearly dieing because they had not been fed, and were dehydrating. After taking Alvarado into custody, Health Department inspectors were contacted so they could give the roosters treatment.
